Congratulations to Global Hub Student Ambassador Yusang Shen, Class of 2023!

Congratulations to Global Hub Student Ambassador Yusang Shen on her recent graduation! We are so grateful for Yusang's cultural perspectives, support to students, and valuable contributions to the Global Hub, and we wish her the very best in her next chapter!

As Yusang wrapped up her undergraduate experience at Pitt, with a Bachelor's degree in Business Information Systems and Marketing and a Certificate in Business Analytics, she has shared these reflections about working in the Global Hub from Fall 2022 to Fall 2023.

As a Global Hub Ambassador at the University of Pittsburgh, I have gained invaluable experiences and connections over the past year. Coming into the role, my key goals were to promote cultural exchange, provide support to international students, and develop leadership abilities. I'm happy to say this role helped me achieve all those goals and more.

I've learned so much about diverse cultures and backgrounds by interacting with both other ambassador colleagues and international students from countries like China, India, South Korea, France, and Saudi Arabia. Conversations ranged from lighter topics like foods from our home countries to deeper discussions on educational systems around the world. Exchanging perspectives so openly has challenged some of my previous assumptions and allowed me to see issues from new angles. My thoughts feel more rounded, flexible and empathetic.

Providing guidance to new international students has been highly fulfilling. As many arrived in the U.S. for the first time, I understood the daunting challenges of navigating a foreign university and culture. By sharing insider tips on issues like enrolling in courses, using campus facilities, and joining student clubs, I hoped to smooth their transition. When a few shared stories of culture shock or loneliness, I listened empathetically and reminded them I was available for support. Knowing even little gestures like inviting them to events helped ease their adjustment has inspired me to continue this advocacy.

The role of a Global Hub Ambassador is not without its challenges. Dealing with  technical issues has been a crucial part of my learning. These experiences have honed my ability to think on my feet, act swiftly, and communicate effectively. It's a skill set that goes beyond the university realm, preparing me for the real world.

All in all, I'm grateful for all the awesome memories made here. The relationships will continue, and the lessons around cultural empathy, leadership and responsibility will travel with me on my next adventures.
